Certain materials are banned from landfilling or incineration for many different reasons. The obvious reason is the toxicity of the material. Chemicals, hazardous waste and toxic waste require special disposal methods to prevent environmental damage. Some materials may not be toxic, but are prohibited due to handling problems. Recyclable items are prohibited to encourage recycling and to preserve our natural resources.
Whatever the reason, prohibited materials require special handling and alternative disposal. The County and State may enforce the prohibitions with stiff fines and penalties. Generally, there are alternative disposal methods for these items and compliance is not difficult. They do, however, often require special handling or separation in order to be hauled to the proper location.
This guide is for your general use based on current conditions that are apt to change without warning. Please call us for additional or up-to-date information when necessary after checking with your local municipality.

Drums are prohibited from the landfill. Alter Scrap Metal (608) 783-8201 will take drums with one end removed and thoroughly washed and rinsed. Drums cannot be mixed with trash and they must be hauled separately.
Tires should be taken to a facility for recycling. Hilltopper accepts tires for a fee. Prices depend on the size of the tire – the bigger the tire, the higher the price. La Crosse County Landfill accepts tires for a fee as well. You may also check with local tire dealers for tire recycling options. Tires must be separated from the load but may be placed on top of the material in the dumpster. A separate fee will be assessed for tires in the dumpster.
Used motor oil should be taken to the La Crosse County Hazardous Materials Facility located adjacent to the County’s landfill at 6500 State Road 16. Automotive filters should be drained for 24 hours. Drained oil filters may be disposed of as trash.
Old car batteries may be taken to the La Crosse County Hazardous Materials Facility located adjacent to the County’s landfill at 6500 State Road 16.
Hazardous Materials (commercial & industrial) are prohibited from landfills with stiff fines and penalties for non-compliance. It is the generator’s responsibility to determine if the waste is hazardous or not. A material is either listed hazardous waste (on a published list), or it is a material that exhibits one or more of the four hazardous waste characteristics (ignitable, corrosive, reactive or toxic). If you think you have hazardous waste, contact La Crosse County Hazardous Materials Facility at (608) 785-9999 for help.
Asbestos is prohibited unless handled properly. We request you contact our office at (608) 783-6727 for special handling instructions, disposal regulations and current disposal rates for asbestos containing material.
Most municipalities have instructions for handling brush. Hilltopper can haul loads of clean wood, including brush, logs and even stumps. Please contact us at (608) 783-6727 for specific instructions.
All yard waste is banned from landfills. Most municipalities handle yard waste differently, some have drop-off sites and some have curbside collection. Contact your local municipality for yard waste instructions.
We can pick up appliances. Please contact our office for pricing information. Some retail outlets will dispose of your old appliance when you purchase a new one. You can also haul your old appliance to our facility in Onalaska.
Liquids of any kind are prohibited in landfills. Empty paint cans or cans with dried paint in the inside can be placed with your recyclables. Old paint (liquid) and lead based paint (liquid or dried), thinners, and hazardous materials should be taken to the La Crosse County Hazardous Materials facility. Call (608) 785-9999 for days and hours of operation. Never dump even small amounts of paints or solvents into trash containers or on the ground as it takes only a very small amount of these chemicals to cause a contamination problem.
